Kim Sheley - Senior Manager Tax Services
Having both corporate and ‘Big Four’ experience, Kim has a unique perspective on the work environment at Rhea & Ivy.
Was the transition difficult?
Surprisingly, no. The first week I was here, a managing partner popped in to see if things were going well. When I admitted that I was a little confused about using the new software, he came over to my computer and began to work on it to help me out. I immediately found the rest of the staff to be as helpful and friendly. The fact that we are all here to achieve the same goal – helping our clients be successful – aligns the entire staff. They welcomed me, were helpful, and made the transition seamless.
Coming from a national firm, what made you decide to work for a local, smaller firm?
My prior experience was very specialized, so I was looking forward to joining a firm that would enable me to gain a greater breadth of knowledge about all types of tax and accounting-related issues. In addition, many of the national firms are making a shift to working mainly with publicly-traded companies. I wanted to continue my work with privately-held and family-owned companies. I enjoy seeing the results of our work in a company’s success. I knew I wanted to work at a place where there was room for advancement without the need to potentially relocate. Rhea & Ivy offered everything I was looking for, right here in Memphis.
What made you choose Rhea & Ivy?
The moment I met the recruiting team member, I knew I would like it here. Rhea & Ivy is well-respected in the industry, and when I visited the office, I was impressed with its professionalism, but also felt at home. The environment is so warm and friendly. There is no hierarchy or competition; we’re all in it together. What impressed me most was the consistency in staff. There are people who have been working here over 30 years and that speaks volumes about the positive culture that has been developed over the years.
After 2 years, how does it compare to what you expected?
It is much better than I expected. I was looking for a place I could go and stay, and I found it. I have learned more in 2 years than I did in all of my previous experience combined. Rhea & Ivy has a positive reputation within the industry and in the local business community. In addition to our local presence, we have a global reach and support system through our affiliation with Moore Stephens. I work a flextime schedule, which is great for a working mother. This enables me to better balance my personal and professional life. Quite simply, the quality of my life is better since I have been working at Rhea & Ivy.
